I'm having trouble understanding the concept of refraction. Can someone explain it simply, perhaps with an analogy?

It's due to the change in the speed of light as it passes from one medium to another. Think of a car hitting mud at an angle – one wheel slows down first, turning the car.

Also, it's governed by Snell's Law. The angle of incidence and refraction are related by the refractive indices of the two media.
